Kristie Joa - Candidate
Hello, my name is Kristie Joa and I am a current 3rd year BNRT student at the University of Calgary. I am running in this years SU by-election for the Faculty of Nursing Representative position. My slogan is: Let me hear you! because I am all about bringing the voices of the students to life. I believe that the representative should not be the only one to share opinions and make decisions; this is the responsibility of the nursing body. My job, as the SU Nursing Representative would be to work as a middleman between the students and the student government and therein the University. Please see why you should vote for me:
- My biggest priority is to lower the fees student nurses pay at the hospitals for parking during clinical. In the past we did have this, so I believe with a lot of effort and some harassing the parking services I can accomplish this goal, because as students we cannot afford $13.00 per day!
- My second issue to address is the placement of clinicals for students. As someone who lives in Springbank I hate repeatedly being placed at the Peter Laugheed. I plan on working with the Dean and the Nursing Faculty employees to create a system where clinical placements are decided based on where students live, or their preference.
- I plan to increase the amount of communication and cooperation between the SU and the UNS. By doing this I will also be giving nursing a larger presence on campus beyond the professional faculty. I will attend UNS meetings to work as a liaison between the UNS and the Student Government and the University. I will open all doors for communication and ideas to be shared from all nursing students.
- I am a strong believer in being involved during our time as students in university. By being involved in clubs etc. I feel it enhances the university experience as well as provides greater opportunities, which may be helpful after graduation. Because of this I will support all nursing clubs to help create the best experience possible for them, as well as, assist new clubs to become recognized by the SU.
- The UNS is looking at placing a levy on all nursing student’s tuition as a means of making money to support the events they throw for us. In the past they made a profit off of the sale of lab kits, however, they are no longer doing this (finally realized it was a bad idea to give first years needles to take home…). As a result the UNS have no means to support their events financially. I am in favour of levying $1.00 per nursing student to support the UNS while still keeping tuition as low as possible.
- I plan to host the suicide awareness presentation with the Faculty of Social Work with the funds that we currently have provided for this event. I believe this is a very important topic for nurses to learn and discuss about.
- Last but not least, the nursing faculty has one of the lowest percentages of student participation in voting during the SU elections. I want to encourage voting and make it fun so that we are more serious and involved in the decisions that affect our University.
Please vote for me, Kristie Joa, in the SU by-election for the Faculty of Nursing Representative position on October 25-27
