Hardave Birk - Presidential Candidate
Hi I’m Hardave Birk and I’d love to be your SU President next year. Throughout my time on campus I’ve worked as an orientation leader, an SR for the Residence Students’ Association, and as the Vice President External for the SU last year. I’ve also worked with Dinos’ Athletics and clubs throughout my 4 years to help build a stronger sense of school spirit and bring students together. I’m a well rounded leader who understands the problems that students face and, as I enter my fifth year, I want to keep working for you.
If elected as your President I want to focus next year on achieving some big things for our campus including:
- Making sure Mac Hall stays in student hands. Our lease on Mac Hall is almost up and next years SU President will be largely responsible for making sure the hub of campus stays run by students for students.
- Act as a strong external representative for you. I will increase our impact with municipal and provincial government, and build strong relationships with media. Through this work I’ll advocate to ease regulations for international students and give all students a greater say in the fees they pay through provincial regulation.
- Increase school spirit and student involvement by coordinating the efforts of major groups to provide more opportunities. Let’s help clubs, the RSA, Dinos’, and SU do what they do best... bring students together. My involvement with all these groups positions me very well to bring the right people to the table and help students find opportunities with each.
If you’d like to know more about me and my platform go to http://justbirkit.wordpress.com. I hope you’ll Birk it from March 6th-8th and vote Hardave Birk for SU President.
Matt McMillan - Presidential Candidate
In ONE sentence; MATT McMILLAN wants to strengthen students’ bond with OUR Union.
By listening to clubs, talking with Residence, and candid one on one conversations with students on campus, both the SU and undergrads will begin to see our potential. As this year’s Vice President External Matt has exemplified this attitude by taking to the halls and talking with students about everything from textbooks, to food, to transit. From this it’s clear what Matt will do: Advocate for high quality, affordable, and accessible education at UofC. When the SU is in tune with students we can focus on:
-Stopping Fees
-A Viable CampusOne Card in MacHall
-A Better Overall Student Experience.
Stopping Fees: We CAN stop them, but it requires lobbying the government, and having a strong and unified student voice. Matt has proven expertise in this as SU VP External this year. Due in large part to his GetOutTheVote initiative and the solidarity of students organized as a result of the GetOutTheVote campaign, the provincial government increased funding to students and postsecondary institutions.
CampusOne: Through negotiation with student interests at heart this CAN happen. We are close; Matt will continue to focus on a deal which will keep prices low, but let CampusOne Users have full access to the food court in MacHall.
The Student Experience: This is its greatest when as many students as possible are engaged as part of the campus community. Through Matt’s broad leadership experience, the SU will be focused and dedicated to work hard WITH AND FOR STUDENTS.
“Together we can reach these goals. Campus has been changing and the SU needs to be there to listen and act with the best interests of students at heart. I can do that, I want to do that, and I WILL do that”

Red Ranger - Power Ranger Slate - Joke Candidate
When we arrived in Calgary following the recent tragedy in Angel Grove, we were focused on one thing: the advocation of everything that is good and honorable. We seek your election so that we can fulfill this mandate and accomplish the following:
- Supporting students in the fight against all evil.
- The recruitment of new members of our team is a top priority. In the fight against the newly reunited Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, it has become apparent that five or six rangers is no longer enough. As the executive of this Students’ Union, we will create opportunity.
- The Macewan Hall master plan will be appended immediately to make room for a new command centre and storage location for our Power Zords. This project will be funded through a generous endowment from Zordon
- We have seen the impact of "Yoga in the Space" and will introduce new programming in ‘That Empty Space’ to encourage our students to learn and master the martial arts.
- Health is important to us. A juice bar will come to Macewan Hall. Expect It.
- Leadership is at the core of our platform. We will advocate for increased leadership opportunities using the clubs system, and pressing the University for new opportunities. The first step to being a hero is to be a leader.
- In this uncertain time, we must always carefully monitor our campus for operatives of evil. Alpha 5 will begin the installation of an emergency warning system immediately.
With the support of you, The University of Calgary, we can take the fight to Rita and Lord Zed, ensuring the values of truth, honor and justice prevail today, tomorrow, and into the future.
In 2012 … Let The Power Protect You
