Raphael Jacob - VP External Candidate

Platform
-
Close the market modifier loophole
Under current regulations (thanks in part to the hard work of past SU executives) the university can only raise tuition by the cost of inflation. However, exploiting the market modifier loophole means there are no checks on the university administration. For the good of students, market modifiers must be eliminated.
-
Regulate non-instructional fees
Another strategy that the administration has used to circumvent the legal limits on tuition increases are so-called “non-instructional fees” which are not regulated in any meaningful way. Administration needs to show us why these fees are necessary, where they are being spent and (most importantly) students need to be consulted and have a vote in any future decisions on fees.
-
Increase student representation on decision-making bodies
Ultimately, the reason why the university was able to get away with loopholes and circumventing the law is because there was no one present to call them out on their actions. We need increased student representation on all the university committees that make important decisions for students. That’s the only way to ensure that student interests are truly being considered.
So that’s my platform, but why vote for me? Two main reasons:
- I’m a 4th year political science major so I know how and why government functions the way it does
- I'm the only candidate for this position with actual council experience. I’ve been an Arts rep for the past year and I can tell you that there’s no substitute for experience.
Students of the University of Calgary, vote for me and I pledge to accomplish all the thing listed above and keep tuition affordable and accessible. I have the knowledge, the experience and the will to get it done. Vote Raphael for VP External.

Kourtney Pratt - VP External Candidate
Platform
My name is Kourtney Pratt and I am in my fourth year at the U of C pursuing a double major in Political Science and Dance. I am a hard working and passionate individual; traits which I believe are key for promoting the student agenda. As VP External I will ensure that the student voice is heard at all levels of government to provide the best opportunities for U of C students.
Locally, students struggle to find affordable accommodation. Allowing additional secondary suites in the University area would ensure more affordable housing for students. This issue requires strong advocacy by students when it returns to the municipal agenda.
Provincially, Alberta has experienced major change and more change is anticipated with a new Premier and an election this spring. It is incumbent upon the new VP External to make connections with newly elected officials and Ministers to ensure that they understand our concerns. The Alberta Government recently announced reforms to Student Loan policies that provide easier access to loans. This is good news and I believe is an example of positive results achieved through the power of student advocacy. It is important to maintain the dialogue. Working with the Council of Alberta University Students, I will continue to work hard to close the tuition loophole that is present in the Tuition Fee Policy.
Federally, I will work with the Canadian Alliance of Student Association to increase support for the Canadian Student Loan Program and will advocate for tuition and textbook affordability.
Students have a strong voice; which voice can effectively be heard through awareness events that bring together the University community and call for action and change. As VP External I will facilitate engagement of the student body and raise awareness of the External portfolio.

Green Ranger - Power Ranger Slate - Joke Candidate
When we arrived in Calgary following the recent tragedy in Angel Grove, we were focused on one thing: the advocation of everything that is good and honorable. We seek your election so that we can fulfill this mandate and accomplish the following:
- Supporting students in the fight against all evil.
- The recruitment of new members of our team is a top priority. In the fight against the newly reunited Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, it has become apparent that five or six rangers is no longer enough. As the executive of this Students’ Union, we will create opportunity.
- The Macewan Hall master plan will be appended immediately to make room for a new command centre and storage location for our Power Zords. This project will be funded through a generous endowment from Zordon
- We have seen the impact of "Yoga in the Space" and will introduce new programming in ‘That Empty Space’ to encourage our students to learn and master the martial arts.
- Health is important to us. A juice bar will come to Macewan Hall. Expect It.
- Leadership is at the core of our platform. We will advocate for increased leadership opportunities using the clubs system, and pressing the University for new opportunities. The first step to being a hero is to be a leader.
- In this uncertain time, we must always carefully monitor our campus for operatives of evil. Alpha 5 will begin the installation of an emergency warning system immediately.
With the support of you, The University of Calgary, we can take the fight to Rita and Lord Zed, ensuring the values of truth, honor and justice prevail today, tomorrow, and into the future.
In 2012 … Let The Power Protect You
