Jason Hong - VP Operations & Finance Candidate

People say… Don’t mix business and work with pleasure.  I say why not?

If I am elected if your Vice President Operation and Finance, I’ll step beyond overseeing the daily duties and operations of the Students’ Union and upgrade student services and transform the student experience to be legend... wait for it... dary.

The major focus of my year in office will on improving MacEwan Student Centre and creating a true hub for student life. My goals are:

  1. First, improving the utilization of MacEwan Student Centre Spaces
    • Repurposing spaces no longer in use and transforming them to be of service to students (i.e. The old post office location) / pushing to start and end construction in a prompt manner
  2. Second, holding the SU to the highest standards in Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Practices
    • UBC recently received Canada’s first Fair Trade Campus label. I think we can do better! I’ll work to have our university recognized as a role model by pushing for Fair Trade products in our service and creating unique student driven initiatives!
  3. Third, taking community partnership to another level and connecting clubs with external resources
    • The SU does a lot to help provide support for its student clubs and activities. But our resources are limited and seem to run out too quickly! I would work to find community partners/sponsors who I can connect to student clubs and bring in external funding sources for student initiatives!
  4. Lastly, better utilizing Tri-media outlets, The Loop and Poster Boards
    • Looking into innovative ways to use these platforms to communicate SU initiatives and continuing the amazing Out of the Office campaign launched in 2011-2012 (aka getting elected officials and executives to communicate more frequently with the student body!)

Hello there! Thanks for coming and reading my extended platform. Here I wanted to take a minute to assure you that I am more than qualified for this position! Believe it or not, Science can mix with business!

In the previous year I was involved in many SU committees and am a proud member of:

  • Quality Money Committee
  • Students’ Union Sustainability Board
  • Operation and Finance Committee (Fall Session)
  • Email and Collaboration Committee
  • Taylor Family Digital Library Student Advisory Board
  • Miss Representation Screening Organization Committee

In my spare time I’ve also picked up a few roles:

  • Partnership Lead for the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference
  • Canadian National Debate Seminar Chief Adjudicator
  • Canadian Junior National Debate Championship Tournament Director
  • Alberta Provincial Debate Championship Chief Statician
  • University of Calgary Debate Society Winter Open Tournament Director

I have the skills, I have the knowledge and I will work to make your SU awesome!

Suit up and vote Jason!

Scott Weir - VP Operations & Finance Candidate

Hey everyone! My name is Scott Weir and I am running for Vice President Operations & Finance.  I have served you as one of the Students’ Union Representatives for the past year, making sure our voice is heard.  I’ve done a good job and a lot of you have seen me out and about connecting to students through clubs, events and just being available to chat.  I have sat on a number of committees such as Operations and Finance and the Students’ Union Sustainability Board (SUSB) and have been hard at work on projects such as the Faculty of Arts Lounge (which is under construction and we’re all pumped for).

I am running for VP Op-fi because it is a position I have extensive experience with through the SU and my personal life.  I have the experience, the drive, passion and always have the student body on my mind.  My platform is something that I want you to hold me to.  If I don’t complete anything on it, you best be sure I’ll have a good reason for it that I struggled with:

  1. Improving Community Space on Campus- Better utilizing the club, community and event space that we have and encouraging greater use of all spaces.
  2. SU Affordable Housing Initiative- The SU should look into playing a greater role in helping students with this issue.
  3. Promoting Green Initiatives- Collectively working on projects such as a campus wide bike network and other projects that just make sense.

These are merely projects I’d like to work on in this role, but I want you to know that ultimately I will do whatever is best for U of C students.  That is my prerogative.  Thank you and please vote Scott Weir for VP Op-fi.  Get Weir’d!

Yellow Ranger - Power Ranger Slate - Joke Candidate

When we arrived in Calgary following the recent tragedy in Angel Grove, we were focused on one thing: the advocation of everything that is good and honorable. We seek your election so that we can fulfill this mandate and accomplish the following:

  • Supporting students in the fight against all evil.
  • The recruitment of new members of our team is a top priority. In the fight against the newly reunited Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, it has become apparent that five or six rangers is no longer enough. As the executive of this Students’ Union, we will create opportunity.
  • The Macewan Hall master plan will be appended immediately to make room for a new command centre and storage location for our Power Zords. This project will be funded through a generous endowment from Zordon
  • We have seen the impact of "Yoga in the Space" and will introduce new programming in ‘That Empty Space’ to encourage our students to learn and master the martial arts.
  • Health is important to us. A juice bar will come to Macewan Hall. Expect It.
  • Leadership is at the core of our platform. We will advocate for increased leadership opportunities using the clubs system, and pressing the University for new opportunities. The first step to being a hero is to be a leader.
  • In this uncertain time, we must always carefully monitor our campus for operatives of evil. Alpha 5 will begin the installation of an emergency warning system immediately.

With the support of you, The University of Calgary, we can take the fight to Rita and Lord Zed, ensuring the values of truth, honor and justice prevail today, tomorrow, and into the future.

In 2012 … Let The Power Protect You
