SU Book Loan Program Assists Students with Cost of Text Books
Deadline for application is September 24, 2010
For many students, succeeding in the classroom is all about applying yourself, keeping up on the latest assignments and studying. However for others, the key to succeeding is not only about good study habits but finding a way to afford the text books and other materials associated with a course.
“Not being able to afford text books and other academic materials is a reality for many students,” says Alyssa Stacy, SU VP Academic. “it’s very disheartening to be accepted into university,pay tuition, have the drive and dedication to succeed and still be in danger of failing because you can’t afford the academic materials needed for your course.”
Recognizing that some financially strapped students find themselves either dropping or failing a course because they can’t purchase the text book needed to study and complete assignments the SU, in partnership with the University of Calgary Bookstore, began the Student Book Loan Program.
“This program is here for those students who have the greatest financial need,” said Alyssa. “Through the program students are loaned their text books for their term of study.”
“The SU is very proud to have partnered with the Bookstore to develop this assistance program that has been in place since 2003,”continued Alyssa. “While originally the program service a total of ten students per semester, through the Students’ Union’s Quality Money initiative the program is now able to assist a total of 40 students each semester.”
To ensure the program assists those students with the greatest financial need, the Book Loan Program is subject to an application procedure.
Selection Criteria for the Book Loan Program includes:
- Completed 1 full year of studies at the University of Calgary;
- Registered as a full-time undergraduate student;
- Enrolled for Fall and Winter Semesters;
- Minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.60 over last academic year ;
- Financial Need - based on submission of application form.
“The Students’ Union is here to offer supports for all students to succeed in their classes,” said Alyssa. “I would encourage any student in a financially difficult situation to review the criteria and consider applying for the program.”
The deadline for application submission for the Student Book Loan Program is September 24. The application is available on the University of Calgary Bookstore website.
