Admit it: you have questions about sex. Everybody does! That's why from February 6 - 10, the Students' Union, SU Wellness Centre and the Women's Resource Centre (WRC) are teaming up to bring you Sex Week. Check out workshops, films, lectures and discussions all around MSC, covering everything you've ever wanted to know about sex.

Monday February 6 

 

Lunch and Learn:  STIs and You (12:00-1:00, Wellness Centre)

What are the STIs that are active in Calgary?  What are symptoms that you should be aware of?  How can STIs be treated?  How can you prevent transmission?  Join Dr. Hong for a discussion of STIs and you.  Workshop sponsored by the Wellness Centre and the Undergraduate Nursing Students.  Light lunch will be provided.  Please pre-register at the Counseling Centre.  Drop-ins are welcome.

 

Head, Heart, and Body Decision Making (3:00-4:30, SU Council Chambers)

Wondering how people have great personally satisfying sexual lives?  Wondering when it is right for you to be sexually active and when abstinence may be a better choice?  Come and discover an easy to use framework.  When you say YES! you will do so with total confidence that you are making the right sexual decision for you.  Workshop sponsored by the Wellness Centre and the Undergraduate Nursing Students.

Peer Sexual Health Update(1:00-2:30, Women’s Resource Centre)

Learn about contraception types, STIs, and sexual health resources and become the “go to” peer in sexual health and wellness.

 

Wise Guyz – Men and Masculinity(3:00-4:00, SU Council Chambers)

What does it mean to be a man in today’s world?  What are the messages men receive about masculinity and how does this affect our sexuality?  This workshop will invite you to explore current issues in male sexual health, myths, and the role of pornography, consent and relationships.  Workshop sponsored by the Wellness Centre and WRC Male Allies.

 

Love Bytes: Stories about the Right to Love screening(5:00-7:00, Wellness Centre)

These films grew out of a participatory action research study where advocates in the disability community share their perspectives, experiences and opinions about the right to love.  These educational films reframe the discussion about love and sex from a place of pride, human rights, and celebration.  Discussion about the research process and findings will conclude with a wine/beer and cheese/snacks social.  Sponsored by the Wellness Centre, the Graduate Student Association and the WHAT Speakership Series.

Wednesday, February 8

 

Sex-Positive Communication Skills(12:00-1:30, Women’s Resource Centre)

Know what you want, but not sure how to get it? Patty Thille from Venus Envy will give you ideas on how to make talking about sex just as great as doing it.

 

The Bible and Homosexuality: Jewish and Christian Perspectives(12:00-1:00, Large Prayer Room MSC 317a)

It is commonly assumed that the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures contain a clear and unambiguous condemnation of same-sex relationships. This lecture gives reasons for questioning that assumption.  Workshop sponsored by the Faith and Spirituality Centre of the Wellness Centre.  Light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

 

Porn and Healthy Sexuality: Can they Co-Exist? (3:00-4:00, MSC Hamlet)

Does Porn have a place in one’s healthy sexuality? Who uses Pornography and why? Explore issues and your own values related to pornography use.   Workshop sponsored by the by the Wellness Centre and Women’s Resource Centre and the Nursing Guys Club.

 

Trinidad screening (6:30-8:30, That Empty Space)

Out and About with Q and Fairytales Presentation Society's OUTReels present “Trinidad.”  This film uncovers Trinidad, Colorado’s transformation from Wild West outpost to “sex-change capital of the world,” and follows three transgender women who may steer the rural ranching town toward becoming the “transsexual mecca.”

 

Thursday February 9

 

WRC presents “The Perfect Vagina” screening (12:00 – 1:30, That Empty Space)

In this documentary film, Heather Leach, a European film maker, explores the recent popularity of labioplasty and the attitudes of both women and men towards the vagina. The screening will be followed with a short discussion period. This is an inclusive event and anyone (and everyone) is welcome to attend!

 

Know your “O”: Orgasm Info for Men(1:00-2:30, SU Council Chambers)

In depth information about men’s bodies will facilitate better, more intense orgasm for you and/or your partner.  Workshop sponsored by the Wellness Centre, WRC Male Allies and the Nursing Guys Club.

For Parents: Talking to your kids about Sexuality(10:00-11:30, Wellness Centre)

Identify and explore personal and family values around sexuality.  Understand the importance of talking about sexuality with children and youth.  Learn basic strategies to talk with children and youth about sexuality.  Workshop sponsored by Family Residence and the Wellness Centre.

 

Sex Week Service Fair(11:00-3:00, MSC North Courtyard)

Meet organizations and groups on campus and in the community who are providing sexual health services and promoting awareness and understanding of GLBTQA community.

 

Ask the Sexperts!(12:00- 1:30, MSC South Courtyard)

Have a question about safe sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, healthy relationships, etc. that you have always wanted to ask?  Submit your question anonymously from January 30 until February 8, and a panel of sexperts will answer questions.

 

Gender Diversity for Friends, Allies and Helping Professionals(12:00-1:00, Wellness Centre)

Individuals who identify as transsexual, transgender, two spirited, or gender queer express a gender identity that challenges cultural expectations. Hence they are often marginalized, pathologized or disenfranchised.  This interactive workshop will utilize a variety of learning mediums to: (a) support participants increase their understanding of issues facing people with diverse gender expressions, (b) engage participants in deconstructing the gender binary of male/man and woman/female and (c) identify best practices to offer support.  Workshop sponsored by the Counselling Centre of the Wellness Centre.
