8:00 a.m. classes: to go or not to go?

So, you’ve looked at your schedule for the 100th time and still asking yourself the same question….

8amclass

Can you relate???

There’s nothing more stressful than dreading that 8:00 a.m. class. For a student who lives an hour and a half away from university with no car, I swore to never take a class that starts before noon! Buuuut life happens and next thing you know, you don’t have a choice but to pick the worst of all, that 8:00 am time slot.

In order to survive, you must embrace the 8:00 a.m. lifestyle. I am going to share my tips and tricks on how I make it to my 8:00 a.m. classes ON TIME, EVERY TIME!

1. Go to sleep early.

I simply cannot stress this enough. I know those assignments pile up and midterms come up faster than you thought, but you need to be well rested before that 8:00 a.m.! If you must force yourself to go to bed, do it! Put away those phones and laptops. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.

2. Organize ahead of time.

I always try to prepare my school stuff and my lunch the night before so I don’t rush in the morning. It’s also a good idea to check the weather and plan your outfit. There is nothing worse than being ready to go and having to go back inside to change in order to coordinate with Calgary weather.

3. Plan your route.

  • Driving. You must check the road conditions first thing in the morning and plan the best route for you to drive. This is especially handy during those winter months. Keep updated with the news on the roads will save you a ton of time in case you need to reroute. There are multiple apps that can help you with this!
  • Transiting. Always check the bus times the morning of your 8:00 a.m. classes! There is usually a schedule for the busses but sometimes they aren’t always accurate. Knowing your options could save you the stress and the cold of staying and waiting for a bus that would never come. Train delays are also inevitable during winter. That is why my next point of could still help you make it to class on time!

4. Allow for extra room.

There is nothing more stressful than putting in all the effort to get out of bed to make it and then come to class when it is half way done. Making sure that you get there is just a part of it. Getting there on time is the complete package! Stuff happens, we can’t control it, but what you can control though, is giving yourself extra room to breath.. You have to be there at 8:00? Why not try getting there at 7:50? Reward yourself and get there relaxed and ready to learn!

5. Look forward after your 8:00 a.m. class.

If you didn’t get a chance to eat before leaving the house, don’t worry because there is FREE breakfast on campus! Yes, you read that right! The SU Campus Food Bank provides free breakfast on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30 – 9:45 a.m. in the Q Centre. Make sure you run to the Q Centre and treat yourself for being awake that early! Still sleepy after class? The couches at Machall are there for you! My favourite spot would be upstairs on the 3rd floor of Machall. You can just crash on those brown comfy couches!

So my fellow students, this is me living that 8:00 a.m. life! Good luck and may this be your new life motto!
