Beyond attending Students’ Legislative Council (SLC), your elected representatives participate in SLC committees. SLC appoints these committees and delegates specific authority and responsibilities to them. SLC committees help the SU develop policy, administer programs, and engage with the needs of the student body.
Representing the student voice on an SU committee is a rewarding experience. From influencing the direction of policy or financial decisions to gaining valuable professional and work experience – membership on an SU committee comes with a number of professional and personal opportunities.
The SU often looks for volunteers to sit on committees. Ideal candidates have a sincere concern for student interests and should be comfortable speaking in a committee or professional meeting setting. Diplomacy, organization, and level-headedness are qualities that would be of benefit to an SU committee.
All student-at-large committee members serve on the committee from the time they are appointed until April 30th.

After the Committee Administrator reviews applications, the SLC Nominations Committee will meet to consider the applications. The Committee Administrator will then only contact those persons appointed by the SLC Nominating Committee.

Each SU Committee has a Terms of Reference, a policy that details the mandate (or purpose) of the committee, its size, membership qualifications, and reporting requirements. Positions on SU Committees remain open until filled.
SU Working Groups
Members: VP Academic as Chair, ten (10) non-Executive members of SLC or Students-at-Large
Description: The Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) Working Group promotes all aspects of URS and meets as required by the Vice President Academic to evaluate applications and select participants. They assist with the set-up, execution, and tear-down of the URS event as directed, organize and evaluate judges’ scores and comments to determine award winners, and present awards to participants at the URS Gala.
Meeting frequency: This group meets on October 19 to select participants, assists with URS set-up on November 26, provides all-day support on November 27, evaluates judges’ scores on November 28, and presents awards on November 29. Additional meetings may be called at the discretion of the chair.

Members: VP Student Life as Chair, four (4) to six (6) non-Executive members of SLC
Description: The Clubs Committee establishes principles, strategies, and procedures for how the SU supports and engages Student Organizations at the University of Calgary, including reviewing and approving award nominations and funding applications.

Description:The Committee of 10,000 allocates money given by Active Members to charitable organizations in Calgary.
Meeting frequency: Once per school year and as needed. Attendance to an awards reception held in April is also required.

Members: VP Operations and Finance as Chair, five (5) members of SLC
Description: The SLC Nominations Committee sets closing dates for committee applications and ensures all SLC and student-at-large positions are adequately advertised. The committee also appoints candidates for various committees and boards. This body meets as necessary.
Members: VP Operations and Finance as Chair, all Executive and three (3) SLC members
Description:The Operations and Finance Committee is an Empowered Standing Committee delegated with the authority to make day-to-day operational and financial decisions for the SU.
Terms of Reference (June 2017)
Members: VP Operations and Finance as Chair, three (3) non-Executive members of SLC, and three (3) Students-at-Large
Description: The Policy Development Committee meets as needed to review and draft new and revised SU policies for consistency, formatting and wording, as well as to review and evaluate existing SLC mandates and/or SU regulatory policies.
Meeting frequency: Biweekly, between October and April.
Members: President as Chair, all Executive, three (3) members of SLC, two (2) Students at Large
Description: The Quality Money Committee is mandated to recommend to the SLC the allocation of monies received by the university for funding of projects to improve student life. This body meets throughout the entire academic year.
Meeting frequency: Weekly on Wednesdays, 90-minute meetings at 4:30pm between November and March.
Members: VP Operations and Finance as Chair, one (1) non-Executive member of SLC, two (2) students appointed by the local WUSC committee, one (1) student appointed by the Residence Students’ Association, one (1) University of Calgary staff member representing International Student Services (ISS), one (1) University of Calgary staff member representing Residence Services, and two (2) Students-at-Large
Description: The Refugee Student Board selects those refugee students for sponsorship to attend and study at the university. The money for sponsorship is obtained from a levy collected each semester from all SU members. The body meets once per month and the meeting is approximately two hours in length.
Meeting frequency: Once in the fall, winter and summer sessions.
Members: VP Academic as Chair, seven (7) non-Executive SLC members, three (3) Students-at-Large
Description: The Teaching Excellence Awards Committee promotes and administers the Teaching Excellence Awards program and selects award recipients. This body does the majority of its work in the last six weeks the fall and winter semesters.
Meeting frequency: Once in the Fall and Winter terms, including a half-day meeting on a Saturday in March. Members will conduct class visits during November and March.

Description: The University and Government Relations Committee’s main purpose is to share relevant information among elected officials on to the relationship between the Students’ Union, Graduate Students’ Association, the University of Calgary, and government. This body meets monthly to review and develop a response to issues that affect undergraduate students.
