Adventures in Eating Halal – Day 1
Hi everyone! My name is Cecilia Langill and I am participating in the Hamper Project during Hunger Week 2015. I am currently a third year Communications Studies student here on campus and am very excited to be working on this project. Throughout the week I will be eating only halal food on and off campus.
Let’s start at the beginning. For the past 20 years of my life I have not had to abide by any dietary restrictions. I have been free to eat and drink whatever I want, whenever I want. I am not allergic to anything, nor am I celiac or lactose intolerant. I love pretty much every food that comes in front of me. I also know nothing about a halal diet. Thankfully I have Muslim friends on my side who are able to give me a brief rundown on the rules. I also have had to do some research of my own to supplement the knowledge that that have imparted upon me. Suffice it to say, eating halal for this week requires me to change my diet and lifestyle quite substantially.
Throughout the week I will be blogging about my experience with access to halal food on campus. I am required to eat two meals each day from the food vendors on campus with a budget of $100 for the week.
