Brand new LGBTQ space in MacEwan Student Centre

The Students’ Union (SU) continued to expand its diverse programs and services for all members of the campus community this week with the grand opening of the new Q Centre in MacEwan Student Centre. The Q Centre had outgrown its previous space of only 140 sq. ft. and required more space in order to continue to expand its extensive programs and services. The new Q Centre occupies the space which previously housed MacEwan Conference & Event Centre offices and provides over 1,000 sq. ft. of space.

The Students’ Union opens brand new LGBTQ space in MacEwan Student Centre.

Since opening its doors in November 2010, the Q Centre has not only successfully promoted campus diversity by providing a safe space, peer support, and various other resources for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities, but has also worked to promote awareness and acceptance of different sexual identities through educational programs (such as their Out and About with Q), partnerships with the university (as a founding member of the Sex Week organizing committee) and advocacy (most recently with their contributions to the push for a multi-stall gender-inclusive washroom in MacEwan Student Centre). The grand opening event was a huge success with the over 50 members of the LGBTQ and campus communities coming together to celebrate the new space. Students’ Union Vice President Student Life Jonah Ardiel welcomed attendees to the space and remarked “the Q Centre continues to be a leader in sexual and gender diversity and a primary space for students, among post-secondary institutions in Alberta and throughout the country.” Q Centre coordinators Leah Schmidt and Katie O’Brien officially opened the Lawrence Hong Peer Support Pod in memory of Lawrence, a founding volunteer who passed away tragically earlier this year. The new area is another great example of a Students’ Union Quality Money funded project which will improve space on campus for students. With the new space the Q Centre hopes to expand their resource library as well as create and run new events within the renovated space.
