Get Out the Vote and SummerDen: President’s Message for July 19

Hey UCalgary!

I’m Branden Cave, your new Students’ Union (SU) President. I hope your summer so far is warm and relaxing. I wanted to introduce myself and also give you a heads up on some cool things the SU has for you this summer!

What is the SU? The SU is your advocate and representative on campus. We act as your voice to the university, government, and the off-campus community. Representing your interests is our number one priority, which is why we advocate against unreasonable tuition increases and why the provincial government has committed to reviewing tuition regulations and frozen tuition for the past three years. We are the main voice at the table, aiming to keep your education affordable and costs low.

However, we’re not only concerned with tuition and the cost of education. The municipal election will be held on October 16 and we want to make sure students vote in record numbers! The municipal government directly impacts your day-to-day life and the student vote could easily decide who represents you at City Council. Sign a pledge to vote and you’ll receive information on when and how to vote as well as a reminder the day of the election. Want to do more? Volunteer with our Get Out the Vote campaign!

We also offer a ton of programs and services including our great SUPER Work program! If you were lucky enough to get a job this summer related to your degree but aren’t quite getting paid enough, the SU offers a $1,000 subsidy to help you out. Check out the link for more information!

If you are missing campus and want to enjoy the Den without the pressure of midterms and essays, join us on July 27th for our summer Thursden (aka SummerDen)! We will have DJ Don Juan and Rocswell bringing the beat and Thursden pricing all day so be sure to enjoy the beautiful weather out on our patio!

We’re all about an open door policy, so feel free to drop by the SU offices and set up a meeting with any of us if you have questions about your SU’s programs, services, events, or advocacy priorities.

Have a great summer, and if you ever run into me this year don’t be a stranger – I am here because of you, so I’d always love to chat, even if it is just a quick hello!
