RE: MacEwan Student Centre dispute

With the recent news of the University of Calgary attempting to take over the management of the MacEwan Student Centre – a building operated and subsidized by the student union since 1967 – we wish to express our support to you and your colleagues during these tumultuous times. Furthermore, we wish to especially condemn the actions taken by the university and President Elizabeth Cannon, seeing their actions as alarming and hostile to the campus’s environment.

Distinct, independent student unions are a crucial part of campus, often fulfilling roles that the university cannot or will not provide. Knowing how well your student union provides these roles, as well as how connected MacHall’s services are to your revenues, we see this takeover as a complete threat to their existence and to your own organization’s autonomy.

We have advocated with the SU in the past, seeing first-hand how much it values integrity, virtue, and duty to your members. You have consistently given students a voice in the quest for a more accessible, qualitative education, whether on campus or off. We are shocked and infuriated that the University of Calgary would stoop to such a level as it has over the past two years.

University of Calgary students and the student union are not tenants, having paid for at least 55% of building costs and owning 55% of the building. We stand with you and know the operation, management, and revenue of MacHall is rightfully yours. We hope that the University of Calgary soon understands this as well.

From the Capilano Students’ Union in North Vancouver, you have our support. In solidarity,

Taylor Wilson
Vice President of External Relations
On behalf of the Capilano Students’ Union
