President’s Email: New Student Leaders Elected
This is your Students’ Union (SU) president with a quick update on some exciting news! I’ll keep it brief, but check the links if you want more info.
First of all, I want to give a huge shout-out to everyone who voted this week in the student elections. Congratulations to the new executives of the 73rd Students’ Legislative Council: Levi Nilson is the new President-elect. The new Vice President, Academic will be Stephan Guscott, Romy Garrido will be the new Vice President, External, and Sarah Pousette won the Vice President, Operations and Finance. Kirsty McGowan takes on the role of Vice President, Student Life. For a full list of all the newly elected faculty representatives and other election results, click here.
You may be wondering about everything you’ve heard in the news about potentially removing the tuition cap. In the lead up to a difficult provincial budget, the latest trial balloon that the provincial government floated was about deregulating tuition. Currently, tuition increases are capped at inflation by regulation, expect for those “market modifier” differential tuition increases we saw in December. I explained more on Global Calgary recently when I came in for an interview. For more information watch this clip.
How do we get politicians to listen to students and act on what we want? It starts with showing them that students do vote. Your SU is running a massive GOTV (Get Out The Vote) campaign but we need your help! We need every student to sign up so that we can contact you with voting information during the next provincial election, here.
And we need volunteers to help us sign up students and make sure they vote on election day! You can sign up here.
Lastly, do you need your taxes done this year? Do you even know what your taxes are? Once again, the SU will offer its popular Volunteer Tax Program to help you out. The program provides free tax filing services to qualifying members of the campus community. The clinic opened on Feb. 27 and is be located in the East Clubs Area (near Jugo Juice). Tax returns will be accepted until Apr. 3 and the clinic is open until Apr. 10. For more information visit our website.
I hope you’re having a great semester. I’m not done working for you yet – in fact, I have a brand new initiative I’m launching next week to provide you with a way to have your voice and your ideas heard. Stay tuned for more info!
