Born and raised in Calgary, Kevin Dang is a fifth-year biological sciences student at the University of Calgary. As a child Kevin was known for his love of hockey and Kraft Dinner Mac n’ Cheese, earning him the nickname “KD.”
Entering university in 2014, Kevin quickly developed a passion for all facets of biology, ranging from plant biology to physiology. He also has an interest in applying these areas of study in fields of education and medicine. Later in his degree, he would have the opportunity to participate in research projects related to these topics and his love of hockey. With the help of some great professors, these experiences sparked Kevin’s love of research and independent studies.
In addition to academics, Kevin is an active member of the campus community. Throughout his university career, Kevin has been very involved with the Office of Leadership and Student Engagement. Starting with the Sophomore Leadership Program (SLP), which introduced him to other opportunities, Kevin also got involved with Orientation Week and the SU Wellness Centre Peer Helper Program. His involvement with the SU Wellness Centre eventually led to more opportunities as the volunteer coordinator/liaison for the entire program. Furthermore, Kevin has also been involved with SU clubs throughout his degree, ranging from general membership to being an executive for UNICEF on Campus. These experiences have served to further develop his ability as a leader and advocate for students.
Kevin started his involvement with the Students’ Union during in 2017-2018 as one of three Faculty of Science representatives. Working with the faculty administration, Kevin was able to contribute to a variety of projects and initiatives. These included expansion of the Peer Assisted Study Session Program, setting the foundations for a faculty-wide research symposium, creation of a new SU faculty representative D2L page, video projects and hosting faculty events. In addition to working on these projects, Kevin had the opportunity to interact with many students and faculty members, one of his favourite parts of the role. This brief time with the Students’ Union has further strengthened Kevin’s passion for student advocacy and the betterment of this campus.
During his free time, Kevin enjoys distance running, going to the fitness centre, playing pickup hockey, baking, and fishing.
