Dear Student,

So I heard you’re thinking of running in the upcoming Students’ Union Election. First and foremost let me tell you that I think that’s an awesome idea! The fun you’ll have and the experiences you’ll gain will be like no other and the thoughts and opinions that you’ll bring to the SU will be invaluable.

First of all, make sure you’ve done your research. There are multiple positions with the SU from Faculty Representative to Senate Representative to Executive. All of these positions have different requirements and responsibilities so make sure that the position you’re applying for is right for you. If you win in the election you will be encouraged to bring all your new and exciting ideas to the table, however it is important to keep in mind that there are lots of pre-existing duties that you will also be responsible for. You can find a list of all the positions as well as a general description here.

Next, it’s time to take a look at the Nomination Package. Make sure you read it over carefully! The Nomination Package is a pretty large document, but don’t let that put you off. It is FULL of important information concerning all areas of the election that you need to know. It will be your go-to-guide for the duration of the election. It contains an in-depth list and description of all the positions as well as other crucial information about campaigning etc. The Nomination Package can be found here.

If you have questions after looking over the online resources and going over the Nomination Package, I definitely encourage you to make an appointment to talk to one of your Chief Returning Officers. Please, please, please don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nolan and Dan are here to help you and to make the election process run smoothly. You can contact them by email at .

Third, campaigning is an important part of any election. In February, Campaign Week will be your time to show the student body what you have to offer. Between posters, forums, articles, and videos, there are many mediums through which you can spread your message. However, there are some regulations concerning campaigning and it is best that you familiarise yourself with them. More information on campaigning and the rules can be found here as well as in the Nomination Package.

Fourth, make sure you stay organized and put all of the important election dates into your calendar sooner rather than later. Elections are a fun but hectic time and you don’t want to miss out on anything important. A list of dates can be found here as well as, once again, in the Nomination Package.

Finally, I just want to say that I am so proud of you for putting yourself out there and getting involved with your Students’ Union. It might be a lot of hard work, and may be tiring at times, but in the end it will be an amazing experience and I can’t wait to see what you have to offer!

Sincerely, Your Friendly SU Student Staff Member
