In front of a crowd of 110, more than $23,000 was awarded to undergraduate researchers at a special ceremony last night. The winners of the 9th annual Students’ Union’s (SU) Undergraduate Research Symposium were announced in 16 different categories. A team of more than 50 judges made up of faculty and staff from the University of Calgary had the difficult task of determining the best submissions.

During the ceremony, Dr. P.K. Doyle-Baker, an award-winning professor from the faculties of kinesiology and environmental design, presented a keynote entitled “Building Authentic Research Experiences: How do they do it?” She discussed the important role researchers play in translating research into impactful information.

This year, 99 students shared their research through poster presentations in MacHall on Nov. 27. The symposium provided a great networking venue for student researchers and a chance to meet a number of professional researchers. More than 200 members of the campus community took time to visit the symposium.

“The symposium had some great competition this year, making the awards selection a difficult process for those involved, but that’s because of the amazing quality of research undertaken by undergraduates across our campus” said the SU’s VP Academic Hana Kadri. “I continue to be impressed by my peers, and I want to congratulate the award recipients and all the symposium presenters for their achievements.”
